New York City is divided into 59 geographic community districts, each one having a respective Community Board (CB) of up to 50 representative members. A Community Board is an official municipal body whose primary mission is to advise elected officials and government agencies on matters affecting the social welfare of the district. Board members are appointed by the Borough President or on the recommendation of the local City Council Member. Board members are your neighbors -- people who live, work, own a business, or have some other significant interest in the community district. Carroll Gardens' Community Board is CB6, which also represents the neighborhoods of Cobble Hill, Columbia Street District, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook. It is located at 250 Baltic Street between Court and Clinton Streets. Community Boards in general have three distinct areas of focus -- land use, budget, and service delivery. Community Boards review land use applications that involve the acquisition, disposition and/or significantly change the use of City-owned properties. It reviews items related to private properties whose owners are seeking approval to use, develop or otherwise modify a property in a way that would not automatically be allowable under the property's zoning designation. Community Boards are required to submit to the Mayor and City Council their capital projects and expense programs and services budget priorities for consideration in the formulation of the city's budget. Community Boards process citizen's complaints and request for municipal service. It processes Street Activity Permits for block party street closures, request for tree plantings and monitors the delivery of municipal services. To report a complaint such as a clogged catch basin, malfunctioning street light, missing street sign or a tree that needs pruning, call Community Board 6's district office at (718) 643-3027. Be prepared to give all pertinent information such as exact location, street address, cross streets, etc. CB6 meets on the second Wednesday of each month except during July and August. All meetings are open to the public. Call the district office for meeting information at (718) 643-3027. |
